chatroulette information

Have you heard of Chatroulette? Every so often a new concept arrives on the internet and becomes a worldwide craze. Such were Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube when they first appeared. In 2009 a Russian website called Chatroulette was launched and it has rapidly achieved amazing popularity, as well as some notoriety. For anyone unfamiliar with Chatroulette, information about it is given below.
In a casino the roulette wheel spins and the ball that is spun into it eventually comes to rest when the wheel stops moving. Of course, where the ball ends up is complete chance. On Chatroulette, users video chat with random strangers served up by the website, hence the roulette reference.
To begin with, users must have a webcam fitted to their computer. However, registration is not necessary. Instead, anonymous visitors to the Chatroulette site begin a chat and a webcam feed from a random user will appear on screen. This person, whoever they may be, will at the same time see the other user’s webcam on their screen.
At this point it is possible for both users to chat to each other, either by instant messaging style text input, or voice, if both have microphones and audio enabled. At any time the chat can be ended by either party, in which case the process begins again. Each user will then be paired with a new random person’s webcam.
When it first launched, Chatroulette’s users numbered less than a thousand, but this quickly changed as the craze spread around the world. Within months the site could boast 1.5 million users.
Chatroulette has been picked up by the celebrity world, with personalities such as Kelly Osbourne, Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton being reported to have used it. The website remains highly popular, although concerns have been raised about users engaging in lewd behavior on screen, calling into question Chatroulette’s suitability for youngsters.
